THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF TAKEO TAKEI HD
Takeo Takei is another illustrator who featured briefly in an early instalment of the unsung heroes series. But as with others I subsequently managed to find more written and visual material, enabling a more detailed look at his life and career. As with quite a lot of Japanese art and culture I find his work both fascinating and baffling. Nevertheless it's a source of infinite pleasure and visual delight for me, and I hope you feel similarly.

THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF JAN MARCIN SZANCER HD
Просмотров 8 тыс.14 дней назад
In his lifetime Jan Marcin Szancer somehow found the time to write articles and scripts, work extensively in theatre, film and TV as a set and costume designer and even took occasional acting roles. He was the very first artistic director of The national Polish TV company between 1952 and 1958 and he also worked as a professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts for over two decades. But none of...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF THÉOPHILE STEINLEN HD
Просмотров 15 тыс.21 день назад
Outside his adopted country France the name Théophile Steinlen doesn't mean an awful lot to most people. He's certainly far less well remembered than his contemporary Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, even though at the time he was just as admired, if not more so. I can think of nobody who captured Parisian life, from the frivolous through to the heartbreaking, in the late 19th and early 20th century ...
THE ILLUSTRATED POSTERS OF ACHILLE MAUZAN HD
Просмотров 9 тыс.Месяц назад
As is frequently and frustratingly the case there is only minimal biographical information about French poster artist Achille Mauzan. Please note I'm taking a holiday in a few day's time so I won't be able to reply to some comments until my return...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF HUGH THOMSON HD
Просмотров 10 тыс.Месяц назад
It never ceases to amaze me that illustrators of the calibre of Hugh Thomson can become so sidelined in terms of awareness of their lives and achievements. During his lifetime he was only marginally less popular than the obvious stellar presences of the Golden Age such as Rackham and Dulac. I had intended to feature him in the unsung heroes series but subsequently found a large volume of his il...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF AUSTIN BRIGGS HD
Просмотров 20 тыс.Месяц назад
In the USA Austin Briggs has a fairly solid reputation among many contemporary illustrators and those with an interest in the subject. But the very American nature of his work has meant that he is much less well known elsewhere on the planet. He was one of a group of illustrators who followed Norman Rockwell and his contemporaries as essentially representational illustrators, but who also devel...
THE CARTOONS AND CARICATURES OF HONORÉ DAUMIER HD
Просмотров 16 тыс.2 месяца назад
The story of Honoré Daumier isn't a particularly happy one. Despite his immense popular success as a humorous illustrator and caricaturist during his lifetime he was somewhat consumed with resentment that he failed to achieve similar success as an artist. As someone who never had the slightest ambition to be a proper artist I struggle to imagine why he just couldn't have been happy with the han...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF EINAR NERMAN HD
Просмотров 24 тыс.2 месяца назад
I first featured Einar Nerman quite early in the unsung heroes series, but as with a growing number of others I felt should return to his work in greater detail. At that time I made the mistake of pronouncing his name Eye-nar, but found out later in Swedish it's Ee-nar. Any other linguistic slip-ups featured here I also apologise for in advance. But I make no apologies for this extended look in...
THE ILLUSTRATED POSTERS OF MARCELLO DUDOVICH HD
Просмотров 21 тыс.2 месяца назад
The title of this video is admittedly a little inaccurate, as Dudovich did also create a reasonable amount of work that wasn't for posters. But I wanted to acknowledge that it was with the many posters he produced throughout the first half of the 20th century that he made his reputation. In all his work he displayed a significant graphic talent, and sadly in this century he doesn't get the atte...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF ANTONY GROVES RAINES HD
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 месяца назад
This look at the work of Irish illustrator Antony Groves-Raines is somewhat shorter than usual, for the frustrating reason that there is next to next to no biographical information about the man, and not a vast amount of decent resolution work to show either. Nevertheless I'm a great admirer of his whimsical work and I feel compelled to do what I can to bring it to a wider audience. I hope some...
THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF EMMETT WATSON HD

American illustrator and artist Arthur Burdett Frost was one of the earliest and most influential illustrators in the USA, and predated the far better known Howard Pyle by a few years. By joining together four illustrators with often quite diverging styles, you never fail to arouse interest, additionally introducing many unknown, or rather forgotten, artists. For your smile for today: I told my husband yesterday I was watching another one of those “quartets of four” (obviously meaning quartet of illustrators). His raised eyebrows made me realise my error, so I gave him an explanation: A quartet surely is no sextet. But lacking two, it will be just that. If to a trio you add one You have a foursome. Can be done. Math is not quite my favourite thing - “Quartet of four has quite a ring”.

With health and visual.problems of my own, it's too bad that we lost him at 47. The detailing and bright colors of the others, especially Rubino, are astoundung. i haven't read mad magazine in decades. but i always appreciated it and admired it. i'm surprised to here just how long its lasted. it was the internet that killed the magazine publishing industry. mad magazine's "son of mad" paperback made an appearance in the beatles' fo;m "a hard day's night." we kids always loved the part of the mag that replaced the lyrics to popular songs at the time. (it would always say "sing to the tune of...). i still have a very STRONG memory of mad's satire of the film "the french connection." it was a laugh riot. also, in the 1969 in review issue they included a panel of a drawing of the beatles with the caption "the beatles dropped hints that paul was dead as nails and rocketed therir record sales." what great memories from america's MOST iconic satirical figure - alfred e. neuman. thanks for the video.

Hello again, and I'm very pleased you appreciate the various qualities of Takei's strange world. Once seen, never forgotten, I think.

Great sound from you and the band Pete. Although not surprised, I had no idea of the depth of your talent. BRAVO!

Thanks a bunch for your appreciation, and especially with regard to my musical contribution. I would do more with my own music but it takes considerably longer to make than the videos themselves.
